Introduction to Kayak Fishing Rig/Rescue - New! -
Beginner Level - open deck kayaks
This class is the first half of the all day Kayak Fishing Rig/Surf/Rescue class. We will cover rigging a fishing kayak for saltwater fishing, paddling, and bracing techniques. In addition we will practice self-recovery methods.
Monterey Bay Kayaks location on Monterey Beach is the perfect place to practice paddling and rescue skills.
This is NOT an actual fishing class, so leave rods and tackle at home unless you plan to fish before or after the class.
This class will be taught by veteran kayak fisherman and ACA trained MBK instructor Aaron Hull.

Beginner Level - open deck kayaks
Ready to take your kayak fishing to the next level? This class is for both experienced and beginner paddlers who are looking to gain more experience for fishing in open water conditions.
We will cover rigging a fishing kayak for saltwater fishing, paddling, and bracing techniques. In addition we will practice self-recovery methods as well as launching and landing in surf with a focus on side surfing and bracing.
Monterey Bay Kayaks location on Monterey Beach is the perfect place to practice skills and test your self in the surf.
This is NOT an actual fishing class, so leave rods and tackle at home unless you plan to fish before or after the class.

Kayak Fishing with Allen Bushnell
Exclusively at the Monterey location (5 hours)
Join local angling guru Allen Bushnell for a fun and informative day of kayak fishing off the shores of Monterey. Allen is the June 2003 Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing Derby winner, and writes the regular weekly fishing report for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He can be heard as co-host on the weekly "fish-talk" radio show "Let's Go Fishing!" on 1340 KOMY in Santa Cruz.
Good areas to fish for halibut and rockfish abound, just a short paddle from our store on Del Monte Beach. Allen will share his favorite tips, techniques, and strategies for getting the most from your kayak fishing adventures. Trips meet at the Monterey store at 7:00 AM sharp. We'll begin with a brief clinic, covering kayak fishing basics, boat outfitting, and launching strategies. Then we'll hit the water, to make the most of the prime hours for catching fish. This is a good opportunity to have fun kayak fishing, find some great spots to fish, and learn more about the sport from a professional angler. We'll fish for 3-4 hours, depending on conditions.
Kayaks, kayaking related equipment, and rod holders will be provided. Participants should supply their own basic tackle items, as well as a valid CA. fishing license. Allen will bring extra terminal tackle to share. Classes are scheduled throughout the season. Call toll-free 800-649-5357 to register.

Monterey Bay Kayaks 3rd Annual Fishing Derby
Come join our 3rd annual Kayak Fishing Derby sponsored by Monterey Bay Kayaks, Ocean Kayak and Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing. Participants need their own kayak, gear, fishing accessories and of course a legal fishing permit. MBK will not be renting kayaks or gear for this event. 1st place for the heaviest game fish caught will be an Ocean Kayak Trident 13. Derby Rules
- All fish entered must be caught from a kayak, without the aid of a powerboat.
- Must have a valid fishing license displayed while fishing.
- All DFG rules apply, including the multiple rod rule. If you are fishing for halibut and have no rockfish aboard, you can fish with 2 rods. One RCG fish on the boat=one rod only.
- Launch and landing from Del Monte Beach by MBK only. Travel to other areas for launching and fishing not permitted.
- 12:00 noon is the "cut-off" weigh-in time. Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by noon to qualify.
- Heaviest weighed sport-fish wins.
- Leopard and thresher sharks included, but no other sharks or rays qualify.
- If two fish have exact equal weight, then the longer of the two wins.
- Final decisions on any controversy will be made by Derbymeister Allen Bushnell with input from participants.
