Monterey Bay Experience
The Harbor, Kelp Forest and Cannery Row
Set within the nation's largest marine sanctuary, our Monterey location provides an exciting and diverse sea kayaking experience. Paddle through the sheltered waters of the harbor or explore the expansive, vibrant kelp beds along Cannery Row. World class wildlife viewing is accented by rich local history, creating an environment that everyone will enjoy.
This portion of the sanctuary is an important habitat for coastal bird species, sea lions, harbor seals, and sea otters. In fact, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is the only area in the world where California sea otters, currently an endangered species, can still be found in the wild.

Our unique coastal climate provides mild temperatures year round. Whether it's sunny or foggy out, Monterey Bay offers a beautiful paddling area, teeming with wildlife. While we offer Guided Natural History Tours, Rentals and Classes year round, some of the seasonal highlights include:
April, May and June—For sea otters and harbor seals, it's pupping season. While baby animals may be spotted, paddlers should be very cautious not to disturb mother and pup feeding and bonding. Also this time of year, strong afternoon winds can come up quickly, especially on those sunny clear days.
July and August—Very mild and calm weather, but could be overcast, which is wonderful for wildlife viewing and keeps the winds down! We are open later to take advantage of longer days with our Sunset tours and extended rental hours. The bay has the calmest surf this time of year—perfect for venturing out further and stretching your paddling experiences with our Coastal Expeditions.- September and October—Usually the warmest and sunniest time of the year on the Monterey coast, and with less crowds! Peak season for bird and butterfly watching during their annual fall migration.
- November through February—Usually cool and clear days, but still lots of activity for marine mammals and winter birding. Surf is up this time of year. learn how to negotiate or play in the surf with our fun classes. Weather can be more unpredictable than usual, so call on the day of your trip to get marine weather conditions.
A typical day paddle
Launch from Monterey Beach and Windows on the Bay park. Calm surf conditions make this a great place for beginners to start their day. A quick paddle will take you into the harbor where paddlers will enjoy a nostalgic journey through aisles of old fishing vessels, many of which date back to the heyday of Cannery Row.
Next to Fisherman's Wharf within the harbor, Heritage Beach provides the perfect spot to relax, have a bite to eat, or do some tide pooling. Sea otters and harbor seals can be seen taking a break and sunning themselves within the protected harbor area.
Be sure to check out all the California sea lions (all males!) who take over the breakwater jetty, except for late summer when they leave to mate further down the coast. Here paddlers often find themselves accompanied by frolicking sea lions, playfully checking you out. Swells and wind can be more noticeable as you paddle around the breakwater jetty and venture out beyond the harbor towards Cannery Row.
Along Cannery Row, stay close to shore and paddle by the amazing kelp beds—the underwater forest that sustains so much life in Monterey Bay. Sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions will be feeding or playing or even sleeping in the protection of the kelp beds. Guides on our tour will find kelp crabs, fish, snails, nudibranchs, sea stars and other fascinating marine invertebrates.
Lucky paddlers may spot playful dolphins and porpoises, or even glimpse gray whales during their winter migration through Monterey Bay.
