"Kids & Kayaks" Group Youth Program
a great combination of fun and learning

Kids and Kayaks Our Kids & Kayaks program is a great way to combine fun and learning. We emphasize the marine sciences while introducing kids to sea kayaks. Whether learning about kelp beds, tidal wetlands, marine mammals or kayaking, this program can be tailored to your group's ages, ability and interest. Younger kids will have fun with lots of hands-on activities and older kids may enjoy practicing rescues and boat control skills. We will also paddle out to look for sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, shore birds and marine invertebrates. Teachers, chaperones and parents are welcome to join.

Our high ratio of staff to customers (1 staff to 8 participants or 1 to 4 boats) allows for personal attention and professional service. Our lead guides are fully trained in leadership skills, rescue skills natural history, CPR and First Aid certification, carry cell phones, first aid kits, tow ropes and other safety equipment.

Our fleet of "open deck" doubles and triples are the highest quality and are suited to the kids needs, ensuring the best experience possible. We also provide: a wetsuit, paddling jacket, and life jacket. All you need to bring are bathing suits, extra top (synthetic, not cotton), shoes that can get wet, water, snack bar and sunscreen!

To make a reservation we need the following information:

  1. Have a preferred date/time and an alternate date/time when you call. We recommend booking at least 6 weeks in advance from April through October.
  2. Choose a location:
    • Monterey Bay – Explore the dynamic shoreline of the Monterey Harbor, Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row areas. Kelp beds, sea otters, harbor seals and marine invertebrates are some of the highlights of this area.
    • Elkhorn Slough - This is the second largest estuary in California. It is a unique habitat for sea otters, harbor seals and shorebirds year round with special emphasis on bird watching during fall and spring migration.
  3. Have an estimated number of minors and adults. We can accommodate groups up to 100.
  4. Know the range of ages/or grades of participants.
  5. If there are any children under 9 yr, plan on bringing an adult with them in a double kayak.

If the date and location are available, we recommend you make the reservation and we will hold the space up to 1 month in advance without payment. We will send you a packet that includes a confirmation letter for your participants (with date, time, what to bring information and directions), a waiver for each participant to sign and an invoice with the payment due date.

One month prior to your trip, we will need the final count of participants and payment in full to confirm your reservation.

If your group needs to drop in numbers, we require fourteen days notice to issue a partial refund.

If your group needs to increase in numbers, we can do so depending on availability at the time.

If Monterey Bay Kayaks needs to cancel due to unsafe weather conditions or forecasts, your group may receive a full refund. It may be possible to reschedule if we have availability. Please keep in mind that light rain or fog tend to create calm waters great for wildlife viewing, and therefore, would not cause us to cancel.

We are insured and a copy of our COI is available upon request.
